The Falklands live by acronyms but you may also hear some local words (many derived from our gaucho heritage) that need a little explanation!
Bogged : Getting your vehicle stuck in soft ground.
Camp : The name given to everywhere outside of Stanley (derived from the Spanish word ‘campo’)
Chay : Friend/pal (derived from the Spanish word Che)
Corral : An enclosure for confining horse or cattle. Keep an eye out for the impressively constructed stone corrals.
FIGAS : Falkland Islands Government Air Service
F.I.D.F : Falkland Islands Defence Force
F.I.G : Falkland Islands Government (sometimes referred to as FIG)
Goose Wing : The wing of an Upland Goose was often used (and still is in some places) as a brush (as in a dustpan and brush)
M.P.A : Mount Pleasant Airport
Smoko : Tea/coffee break … usually in the morning.
Stone Run : The vernacular term for openwork boulder accumulations/streams that are found across valleys and velly sides in the Falklands. They were formed during periglacial conditions.
